I’ve always tended toward the “less is more” side of life.
In fact, that’s one of the main themes of this site! So when my family went through a variety of health problems starting 5 years ago, I looked for natural ways to help.
We’ve tried countless natural remedies for everything from reflux to bug bites to Lyme disease symptoms. Some of them worked and some of them didn’t. But we learned tons along the way.
We learned about the importance of a good diet, how to manage multiple food allergies and how to make delicious herbal teas. Along the way, I tried out essential oils from several different companies. They smelled great and seemed to be useful for many applications, but I didn’t really get all the hype about essential oils.
I even tried a couple oils from a company called Young Living.
With one of the Young Living oils, my son was able to maintain normal respiratory function – that was our first big success. But unfortunately, I got distracted, decided the Young Living oils were too expensive and moved on to other things.
Earlier this year I was doing some research (yet again) and kept coming across references to Young Living. I decided to reactivate my membership and try out a couple oils.
Once they arrived I was sold!
The FDA won’t allow me to make specific health-related claims for these products or to suggest that they can take the place of a drug. That’s why I can’t discuss our specific results here, but I can tell you that we now have some excellent solutions for stress and tension, to help the kids relax at bedtime, and support our immune systems.
If you’re entering a new area of natural health, make sure to avoid the 3 mistakes I made:
- “Trying” something out without a full understanding of what you expect to happen and how a product is intended to work. Education is key and I am doing a lot more of that these days.
- Giving something enough time to do it’s job. Like a lot of things in life, sometimes it takes time to see results. I was often giving up on a product after one or two uses and before it had a chance to work properly.
- Skimping on quality. I bought a lot of cheaper oils which are probably fine for cleaning products and creating a pleasant scent in a room, but not so effective with more important applications. Did you know that some essential oils sold as “pure” only have as little as 5% of the actual oil? Lesson learned and it’s too bad I have to ditch a number of cheaper bottles of essential oils.
Why I choose Young Living

How cool is that? They have farms and distilleries on 6 continents! They take the production of essential oils very seriously.
